Concert: Det går an https://svenskakammarkoren.se/en/concert-det-gar-an/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=concert-det-gar-an Thu, 25 Jun 2026 17:36:47 +0000 https://svenskakammarkoren.se/?p=2453 The season opens with Daniel Fjällström’s opera Det går an, based on Jonas Love Almqvist’s groundbreaking 1839 novel. When first published, the novel caused considerable debate through its challenge to contemporary ideas about marriage, women’s independence, and the individual’s right to shape their own life. Nearly two centuries later, these questions remain deeply relevant.

The opera premiered at Läckö Castle Opera ten years ago and is now brought to life in an intimate chamber version. With a smaller ensemble of cello, violin, and piano, the music unfolds in a close and expressive setting where every detail can be heard. Featuring Annalouisa Magnusson, sopran, and William Tarach, baryton, in the roles of the glassmaker’s daughter and the sergeant, the opera tells a story of love, longing, and the courage to choose one’s own path.

Daniel Fjällström’s music combines dramatic intensity with moments of lyricism and reflection, allowing Almqvist’s ideas to resonate with our own time. We warmly welcome you to a compelling operatic experience where literature, music, and human questions meet.

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom offers rich sonorities, spiritual depth, and profound expressiveness, while Ingvar Lidholm’s Four Choruses presents a distinctive musical language shaped by Nordic poetry and twentieth-century innovation.

Concert: The Little Match Girl https://svenskakammarkoren.se/en/the-little-match-girl-passion-2026-2/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-little-match-girl-passion-2026-2 Sun, 22 Jun 2025 19:46:32 +0000 https://svenskakammarkoren.se/?p=2146 David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion is a quiet yet unsparing meditation on Hans Christian Andersen’s tale The Little Match Girl. In Lang’s interpretation, the fairy tale is brought into our own time and transformed into a modern passion—not about redemption through sacrifice, but about suffering born of the surrounding world’s silence.

The music moves through an ascetic landscape of voices, percussion, and pauses. Every sound carries traces of cold, waiting, and repetition. Like the girl’s matches, the music flares briefly—fragile, fleeting, and vanishing. What is heard is as important as what is withheld.

Performed in English, The Little Match Girl Passion is not addressed to children, but to us as adults—those who are able to help, yet do not always do so. In the encounter between text and music, the girl’s loneliness becomes a mirror: humanity is not measured in compassion, but in action. When the work fades away, there is no consolation—only the question of what it means to see, and still walk on.

With this production, the Swedish Chamber Choir expands and challenges the traditional concert format, weaving song together with movement and staged expression, under the direction of the choir’s conductor and artistic director Kim Simon Phipps, in collaboration with choreographer Aloun Marchal. The choir also broadens its audience through a short, exciting, and intense tour to exceptionally fine concert halls in the Netherlands and Belgium.

In addition to The Little Match Girl Passion, the choir will perform Bo Holten’s Regn og rusk og rosenbusk, also set to a text by H.C. Andersen. In this virtuosic work for 16 voices, opposing views of existence—optimistic light and pessimistic darkness—compete with one another. The themes of light and darkness, harmony and dissonance, are further reflected in Ingvar Lidholm’s starkly contrasting De profundis and in Sven-David Sandström’s intensely expressive version of Henry Purcell’s Hear My Prayer, O Lord.

On Full Wing https://svenskakammarkoren.se/en/concert-summer-heat/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=concert-summer-heat Sun, 22 Jun 2025 19:44:12 +0000 https://svenskakammarkoren.se/?p=2144 Let yourself be swept up in the currents of a musical flight with the Swedish Chamber Choir and violinist Ava Bahari!

It’s no coincidence that birds hold such a central place in poetry and music—they sing and they can fly, just as music longs to do. In Lars-Erik Larsson’s No Bird Soars Too High, there is a promise of unrestrained freedom, renewal, and life. In Caroline Shaw’s beautifully floating and the swallow, the small, everyday bird becomes a bearer of something greater—perhaps the soul’s restlessness, perhaps the hope of returning home.

The highlight of the concert is Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending, where, together with internationally acclaimed violinist and Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra Artist in Residence Ava Bahari, we unfurl our most radiant plumage and soar into the skylark’s shimmering song.

The nightingale sings in Felix Mendelssohn’s Die Nachtigall, and in Edward Cowie’s playful Lyrebird, an entire aviary bursts forth with Australian lyrebirds, famed for their extraordinary ability to imitate other species. What makes Lyrebird so fascinating is not only the abundance of birdsong, but how Cowie blurs the boundary between nature and composition. Is this birdsong becoming music—or music revealing that birdsong is already composition?

But not everything that flies is a bird. In Eric Whitacre’s Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine, humans, machines, and doves flutter through a brilliantly organized chaos, as Leonardo da Vinci—through Latin, whispers, and sheer optimism—realizes his wildest dream.

Come and fly with us!
