Stabat Mater – Masters of the Passion

Maria, the mother of Jesus, is a highly significant figure in the Passion narrative. With a grieving heart, she looks up at the cross, helpless in the face of her son’s suffering and impending death.

The Latin text Stabat Mater has inspired composers from all eras to explore new musical languages to depict Mary’s sorrow, and Krzysztof Penderecki’s heartbreaking setting from 1962 is no exception. The program’s music also reflects Mary’s life as a whole, from the Annunciation to the burial, interwoven with other masterpieces that address Jesus’ crucifixion and death.

Welcome to a moving concert where music spanning five centuries—featuring works by Bruckner, Gibbons, Poulenc, MacMillan, Taverner, and more—carries forth the message of the path of love.
